Overview

This self-checkout kiosk system is live across 5+ co-operative society deployments in Kuwait to shorten queues on routine purchases — including KNET card payment at the pedestal. The product targets the moment when a full staffed lane is overkill but a confusing kiosk would create more support work than it saves.

Design started with thorough UML modelling so hardware flow, POS integration, KNET payment paths, and exception paths were agreed before code froze assumptions. That upfront clarity mattered because the kiosks had to talk to systems stores already trusted for inventory and payment — not invent a parallel universe of stock counts.

Integration with pre-existing ASP.NET point-of-sale backends happened without freezing live operations. Inventory lookups, basket updates, and KNET payment handoff reuse the retail core. The edge experience is new; the ledger of truth stays where operations already reconcile.

The UX is touch-first: large targets, barcode input, quantity edits, clear errors, and a KNET payment handoff cashiers and shoppers can follow without a training manual. Accessibility and bilingual labels matter in public retail where guests will not read a help wiki.

Branches needed identical behavior with local configuration — store identifiers, peripherals, KNET terminals, and environment settings — not one-off forks per location. Configuration discipline is what makes a multi-branch rollout supportable after the pilot glow fades.

Delivery used Agile ceremonies and a streamlined CI/CD pipeline so builds and deploys stayed repeatable as more societies came online. Retail software fails operationally when every site is a snowflake; the pipeline was part of the product, not an afterthought.
